Review – Jazz, a beginner’s guide

Jazz: a beginner’s guide by Stuart Nicholson – 4 stars

Something a little different this time. The book is a good introduction to jazz and the various sub species. It explains how it developed from the blues and moved into various styles and how it spread worldwide and how that has affected it. The music has gone from a purely American genre to something that is fully international.

This book as well as looking at the history of the music, gives some hints on how to listen to it and understand it. There are ten suggested playlists (One for each chapter excluding the introductory ones. Nearly all the tracks are easily found on Amazon Music, many free with Prime and none cost more than £0.99 (UK) I was unable to find a few of the more obscure tracks but it was only a few.
